1. Check what you are actually renting
An entire villa, a private apartment and a room in a villa-style property can appear in the same accommodation search. Read the description of the unit you are selecting, not just the name at the top of the page. Check whether other guests or staff use the grounds, entrances or outdoor spaces.
If exclusive use matters, ask directly which areas are reserved for your group. A shared pool may be completely fine for your plans, but it is a different experience from having one to yourselves. Make sure the answer applies to your dates and selected unit, especially when a property offers several accommodation types.
2. Look beyond the bedroom count
Five bedrooms do not automatically mean the right arrangement for five couples, and a property sleeping eight may rely on sofa beds. Read the bed configuration and check whether bathrooms are private or shared. For families, ask whether children would sleep near the adults or in a separate building.
Think about how everyone will spend time together too. Is there enough seating at the dining table? Is there a sheltered outdoor spot when you want shade or the weather changes? Ask about steps and pool access where relevant. These details make the stay comfortable long after the first excitement about the view has settled.
3. Understand the last part of the journey
Map the exact property rather than relying on a broad area label. A hillside villa may offer the setting you want while needing a more deliberate plan for groceries, dinner and outings. Ask about the final access road, parking, steps from the arrival point and any boat crossing.
Check airport arrival arrangements with both the host and transport provider. If the property is hard to find, request written directions or a precise meeting point. Save the details somewhere available without a mobile connection. A little clarity here is particularly welcome when you arrive tired and would rather settle in than navigate.
4. Compare complete prices for the same stay
Use the same dates and guest count for each option, including children where required. Read the final breakdown for taxes, cleaning charges, deposits and any services you expect to use. If air conditioning, a chef or additional housekeeping is mentioned, check exactly what is included in the rate you selected.
Compare cancellation and payment terms alongside the price. Two similar totals can represent very different flexibility if your plans change. Keep a copy of the listing and your confirmation, and resolve any mismatch before paying. The aim is to understand your booking, rather than assume every attractive rate comes with the same conditions.
5. Make sure the location fits your actual week
Choose two or three activities that matter most and see how each shortlisted property connects with them. If most of your plans are around the Pitons, compare a Soufrière base. If beach time and evenings around Rodney Bay lead your list, investigate the north. Marigot Bay deserves a look when the harbour setting is part of the attraction.
Then ask what you would do on a day when you choose to stay home. A villa should work for that day too. Once you have a clear location, suitable layout and complete quote, you can stop comparing every option on the island. Keep the booking contact details handy and give the rest of your attention to the holiday ahead.
